Heuristics Evaluation

What we did

A team of 5 members reviewed static screens of the ‘resume builder’ feature of the indeed platform. For the evaluation, we used Nielsen Norman Group’s 10 Usability Heuristics for User Interface Design. Each individual reviewed both - the mobile app as well as the desktop website. For the mobile app, the choice between android and iOS interface was based on availability.

The evaluation and recommendations you see here are a combination of the analysis done by each individual. Furthermore, we scored each evaluation point based on the severity of the usability heuristic. Along with, whenever necessary, we have incorporated ways of improving the usability and user experience.

10 Usability Heuristics Criteria

What we found

Some parts are good for users; some parts are not easy for users to understand and use. Therefore, we decided to keep researching the resume building function to do more tests and do the user interview.

Below are examples of what we found based on Heuristic evaluations.

Executive Summary

Task

What are most users struggle for

Task 1 #Locate the resume tab

Starting from the landing screen of the Indeed website, the user is asked to identify the resume tab without any instruction.

#This is the only task user spent longer on PC than mobile since the resume building working is not clear on PC.

Task 4 #Fill out Education details

This screen is for the users to add their education where they add information regarding all previous educations.

Task 7 #Add job preference

This screen is for the users to add the kinds of jobs they are looking for, so it is easier for the application to understand their preferences and needs.

Task 9 #Review Resume

After the user completes the resume by inputting all the info related, the user can see this review screen. Here, the users can read through the draft of the resume and make some necessary changes.

Users preferred using desktop over mobile application. The experience on the desktop was fairly consistent across users.

Total Time Taken | Mobile & Desktop

7/8 users took relatively less time to create a resume on the desktop. The difference in time can be attributed to the ease of typing that the desktop provides over mobile. It also talks about the relative ease of navigating the website over the mobile application.
